Subcontractors should use like limits of liability to the general contractor and if umbrella excess is required by the project owner then the subs will place the same protective umbrella excess limits plus have them name you additionally insured on their certificate of liability for general liability with a waiver of subrogation, additional insured for commercial auto with hired & non-owned autos, command certificates of workers comp with a waiver of subrogation and always place sub-contractors in your 'sub-contract agreement'.
We have a copy of a sample 'sub-contractor agreement' that is required for your proper indemnity (to protect yourself), with subcontractors; let us know if you would like a copy for your review. The text of the attachment is modifiable. The wording to help separate you from your subcontractor is the hold harmless/indemnity agreement. We suggest that you have a contractor contract specialist give you advice on how to properly design one for your specific business needs.
OCP (Owners Contractors Protective), is commonplace for an owner to require the general to procure in the event of third party action over claims from the generals employees or subs employees holding/suing owners claiming negligence for injury due to job site conditions, etcetera; it offers response to defense costs for the owner, sometimes you can find this already in your general liability policy, additional insured endorsements.
